The Family Photo Series: Advanced Photo Finial

When we die we leave a mark in the memories of those we leave behind. While most of the time these memories are emotional, those burned in our brains, often times these are physical. I am exploring the memories my great-grandfather left behind in the photos he took. Although we don’t have the same blood, he is still an important person in my past and his experiences have helped to form my own personal history. The use of self-portraiture is necessary, and the combination of the past and the present help to create my future. This work is designed to make you question your own family memories and the role they play in your life.

Just an Observation

Once I was told I could not draw, and that I shouldn't be bothered to try. It nagged at me recently (for other reasons too long to get into) for awhile before I realized.... I can draw. It's abstracted a bit, and sometime my lines aren't straight, but I draw what I intend to draw. I'm not saying I'm brilliant, but I don't draw stick figures. The point is, now that I've been working on this 365 project for over six months now I can see a huge difference in my skills. I draw a bit straighter, occasional the perspective is right, and most of all I enjoy it. The only person who can't draw is Hermione Granger! (Get the reference? No? No?)

Thanksgiving

Went up to visit my Aunt for Thanksgiving. I got permission to take photos in the basement:

my late uncle was a hunter so there are plenty of skulls about

My aunts lab, she's very protective and will literal be right behind you when you turn around

my cousins little boy

Yeah Holga! I've been itching to take some more photos with it for awhile.

Up in the mountains....

Lost

Feeling lost is easy. Everything is forces itself upon your mind. You aren't always yourself, or who you feel you are.

We live by social standards, social morals. You are your environment, your social standing, your family, your race, your lifestyle. It isn't right and often you wonder how its even possible to be someone, someone different from someone else.

I still can't say this is me. This is me at the complete essence of myself.

But it isn't always such a burden, we can't just come into this world with no influence. We need to learn to grow, to feel, and without a basic understanding of something it isn't possible for any of this.

To to find yourself somewhere is not a short journey but one of a lifetime.

365: November 8th

Last night I dreamt I was living in a English Manor house and there was this tiny little cobra living in the cupboard. I also had my BFA review today. Hmmm....

I am Me.

I am me. An American Mutt who has roots in Germany, Norway, England, and even in the soil of this country. I come from the sea, when my ancestors sailed here looking for a better life. From those who fought for our country in the white and navy blue. From teachers and artists, housewives and immigrants, this is the blood that runs through my veins, and I am proud of this.
