Large Scale Photograms

This was my third project of the semester in my photo class. I'm not really happy with it completely- but it came out better than I thought it would. I knew that I wanted to do something with large cutout spaces, and while I was trying to think of a concept the idea of symbols came into my mind:

While I was researching different symbols from different places I came across hobo symbols, that where used during the 20's and 30's. I wasn't sure If just using the symbols would be enough, so I added text and pictures. I took a couple quotes from the Grapes of Wrath & used photography from the FSA by photographers such as Dorothea Lange. Part of my reasoning for this was that I don't really do a lot of mixed media with my work, and it's something I felt like I needed to try. I do like how they look- but I could have done this smaller and it would have looked the same. It didn't translate into "photograms" the way I wanted them too.
